L4LL's argument for itself was economic as much as literary: literacy is the bedrock under academic and professional achievement and under financial and health literacy, so grasping the basics of reading creates opportunity, stronger communities and stronger families. Hispanic students underachieving in school, beginning with reading, was the reason the summer programme existed.

The page was equally clear about what the group was not. In its own words: they were not literary agents or editors, they did not review manuscripts, and they did not review Latino literature. Writers looking for publication advice were pointed at writers' workshops. Authors could submit a book for consideration in the following year's summer reading lists.
